Private Medicine · La Jolla

Your doctor should know your name, answer your calls, and actually give a damn.

That's the whole idea. Soledad Health is a membership medicine practice where you get a physician who has time for you, knows your story, and is genuinely in your corner.

Why We Practice This Way

A different kind of practice

The conventional system wasn't built for the kind of care that actually changes lives. It was built for throughput — 15-minute appointments, insurance codes, and reactive treatment of symptoms already well advanced.

Upstream medicine removes the middleman. No insurance billing. No rushed visits. A flat monthly membership that covers direct, unlimited access to your physician — by phone, text, same-day appointment, or video.

You get a physician who actually knows you. We get the time to do medicine the way it was meant to be practiced.

Our Philosophy

The Soledad Health Approach

Most primary care treats the body as a machine. Soledad Health treats the person as a system — biological, psychological, and behavioral — where the inner environment shapes the outer health. This isn't alternative medicine. It's what the science has always pointed to.

01

Clinical Excellence First

Rigorous, evidence-based medicine. Thorough histories. Unhurried visits. Longitudinal relationships built over years. This is the credibility floor — everything else rests on it.

02

Root Cause Orientation

Symptoms are signals. Before managing a condition, we ask why it exists. Stress physiology, sleep architecture, inflammatory load, nervous system dysregulation — these are clinical variables, not lifestyle soft talk.

03

The Inner Environment

Chronic stress states suppress immunity, dysregulate hormones, and accelerate disease. Addressing the inner environment isn't fringe — it's upstream medicine, grounded in published neuroscience and physiology.

What This Looks Like

Medicine that goes deeper

One

A thorough first conversation

Your first visit is 60 minutes. We go through your full history — not just the chief complaint, but the story behind it. Where you've been, what you've tried, what you're actually after.

Two

Comprehensive baseline labs

We order a full metabolic, hormonal, inflammatory, and cardiovascular baseline — not just what insurance approves. Understanding your biochemistry is prerequisite to understanding you.

Three

A personalized health plan

No two patients are the same. Your plan addresses your specific physiology, stress load, sleep quality, movement, nutrition, and conditions in play — with a clear rationale for each recommendation.

Four

Ongoing, direct access

Text your physician. Call same-day. Video when convenient. No gatekeepers, no phone trees, no waiting three weeks to discuss results. Your health doesn't pause between appointments.

Our Story

Soledad Health was not built from theory.
It was built from lived experience.

Devon's Path

Devon spent years as a physician in acute inpatient medicine — treating patients at the most critical moments of their lives, when disease had already taken hold. The work was meaningful. It was also relentless. Panels of thousands. Minutes per visit. Systems built for throughput, not healing. The question that wouldn't leave: what would it have taken to reach these patients years earlier — before the crisis, before the damage?

Nancy's Path

Nancy built her nursing career across emergency medicine, oncology, and the OR — the highest-acuity environments in healthcare. She witnessed the same pattern from a different vantage point: patients arriving late, care fragmented, the human being behind the diagnosis often invisible. What she also witnessed was something the system never taught her to look for: the invisible accumulation of small insults — stress, poor sleep, chronic nervous system dysregulation — quietly eroding health long before any diagnosis appeared.

The Turning Point

The shift came not from a lecture or a textbook but from lived experience. Devon and Nancy began investing deeply in their own health — studying what actually moves the needle long-term. Neuroscience. Stress physiology. Sleep architecture. The nervous system's relationship to immunity and hormonal balance. Nancy applied this knowledge during a personal health journey of her own, optimizing her biology in ways the conventional system had never offered her. That process worked. And it changed everything about how they understood medicine.

Why Soledad

Soledad means solitude — stillness, presence, the quiet that makes clarity possible. It is the quality we believe real healing requires, and the quality the conventional system makes nearly impossible. Soledad Health exists to create the space that medicine was always supposed to have. A place where the physician knows your name, your history, your goals — and has the time to actually help you reach them.

We built this practice because we've lived on both sides of the system — as clinicians and as patients. We know what it feels like to navigate healthcare that sees a chart instead of a person.

Soledad Health is small by design. The panel is limited so that every patient receives the time, attention, and partnership that genuine health requires. This is medicine practiced the way both of us always believed it could be.

"Soledad Health was not built from theory. It was built from the wounds of a broken system — and the proof that a better way is possible."

Devon McGee, MD
Founder · Primary Care Physician

Board-certified in internal medicine with extensive experience in acute inpatient medicine — giving Devon a rare longitudinal view of how chronic disease progresses when caught late, and what it looks like when it isn't caught at all.

His clinical interests center on preventive medicine, root-cause diagnosis, metabolic health, and the upstream physiological factors — sleep, stress, inflammation, nervous system regulation — that conventional care rarely has time to address. He built Soledad Health for people who want a physician genuinely invested in them — not a visit, not a code. A partner.

Clinical Partner · Registered Nurse

Nancy brings a depth of clinical experience across emergency medicine, oncology, and perioperative care. She has worked in some of the highest-acuity environments in healthcare — environments where clinical precision and human presence have to coexist.

Her nursing philosophy has always centered on the whole person. She brings that same orientation to Soledad Health — a clinical partner who understands that how a patient feels in the room is as important as what their labs say.

Questions

What people ask

No — and that's by design. Soledad Health covers your primary care relationship comprehensively, but you'll still want insurance for hospitalizations, surgeries, imaging, and specialist care. We recommend pairing your membership with a high-deductible or catastrophic plan, which is often much more affordable when your day-to-day primary care is handled outside the insurance system.
DPC is a model where you pay your physician directly — a flat monthly fee — rather than routing everything through insurance. This removes administrative overhead, allows for smaller patient panels, and restores the physician-patient relationship to what it was designed to be. Your doctor knows you, has time for you, and is accountable to you — not to a billing code.
Members have direct access via text message and phone call. Most non-urgent questions are answered the same day. For urgent issues, same-day appointments are available. You will never navigate a phone tree or wait days for a callback.
This depends on how your HSA is structured. Under current IRS guidance, DPC membership fees are generally not HSA-eligible on their own. Lab work and other services ordered outside the membership may be separately reimbursable. Confirm with your plan administrator.
This refers to the integration of mind-body science into clinical care — stress physiology, sleep optimization, nervous system regulation, and behavioral factors that directly influence immune function, hormonal balance, and chronic disease risk. We draw on published research in psychoneuroimmunology, polyvagal theory, and lifestyle medicine. This is upstream primary care grounded in evidence.
